Discovering new species is an exciting quest, right?
Well, some parts are—but after you find a cool-looking organism that you think is a new species, there’s a lot more to be done.
Recently, a group of crab and crustacean experts locked themselves in a room together for 2 weeks to speed up the process of looking for new species among thousands of specimens collected in the Caribbean.

This curious little green alga, referred to as Mermaid’s Wineglass (Acetabularia acetabulum), grows in clusters on rocks or shells covered with sand in sheltered parts of rocky coasts within its range. Although it grows to 3 cm, it consists of just one cell.
My eye caught a dark form lying on the river bottom. It took me a few moments to comprehend what I had stumbled upon. Lying peacefully in the shallow waters of the river, only a few meters from shore, was a full-grown cougar. The contrast between the serenity of the scene I was witnessing and what must have played out here in the cougar’s final moments made me shiver. It was the first shiver of many, as I stripped down and waded out into the icy water to get this shot. x
